Year 9 Rugby

Southam Y9 rugby team had an early start for a trip to Camp Hill in Birmingham for their first fixture after the half term break. After an impeccably observed minute silence the boys got down to business.
Southam started brilliantly and retained possession for a number of phases before quick thinking from Logan who placed a punt into space pushing Camp Hill back. Camp Hill knocked on and from the resulting penalty, Reni seized the opportunity and dived over the line for an early lead.
Southam continued to press and repeatedly turned the ball over through Cole and Max. This allowed a platform to be built for the backs. Sharp hands from Callum and Logan released Jake G who slid in over the line. The try was converted via the post for a 12-0 lead.Straight from kick off Callum caught the ball and set off. Terrific pace and fast feet enabled him to score a wonderful individual try which was converted for a 19-0 lead.
Southam were playing some fantastic rugby with strong rucking allowing the backs to run moves. Southam scored their 4th try with James finishing off a terrific team move. A 5th try followed after good defensive work from Rory turned the ball over before Reni picked up and dived over the line. The final play of the first half was Logan’s conversion which made the score 33-0.
Southam continued playing strong rugby and continued to attack. Some good defending from Camp Hill prevented more scores. Southam did score their first try of the half after a lighting break from Callum who broke down the left wing and touched down for his second try. Camp Hill got on the score sheet after a powerful run to make the score 38-5. The final score of the game came after sustained pressure from the forwards allowed Tom W to drive over the line from 5 metres out to make the score 43-5.
Despite the cold and tough conditions, the year 9s produced a fantastic performance with powerful tackling, strong rucking and clinical handling.
Man of the match goes to Max F-P for some terrific tackling and ball retention. A great performance. Well done gents, enjoy the weekend.
