On Wednesday evening Southam Year 9’s travelled to Alcester Grammar School for their 3rd game of the season hoping to get back to winning ways after defeat last time out.
Southam started brightly and were passing the ball well with some good attacking play but couldn’t capitalise. AGS took the lead after a surging run through the middle of the defence to take the lead 5-0. This didn’t deter Southam and they continued to battle hard, with strong tackling from Max, Paul, Rory and Callum. Southam levelled the score after some fantastic handling between Logan and James B before an offload to James P who scored in the corner. 5-5. Southam should have scored further tries but for stern defence from AGS. Half time score 5-5.
Southam used the slope to their advantage in the second half and pinned AGS back into their own 22. Strong forward play from Tom W, Shaun, Zsombor secured ball for Reni to pass to Rory to touch down after a powerful run. James P converted to give Southam the lead for the first time. Southam scored their second try of the half after a catch and drive try from a line out scored by Tom W. Southam thought they’d scored another but for an accidental knock on over the try line. Jake grabbed the year 9’s 4th try of the afternoon after good work from Jaden and Brendon allowed him to power through and score. Southam continued to dominate with some fantastic rugby from the forwards building the platform for the backs to try and run some moves but unfortunately there were no more tries. Southam did concede 2 tries in the last 5 minutes after periods of prolonged pressure from AGS.
Final score 22-15 to Southam.
Man of the match: Reni for some tremendous tackling in defence and releasing quick ball to build attacks.
The next match is next Wednesday at home to Finham Park. Well done lads on a good performance.
