Southam hosted Fairfax in the first Saturday morning fixture. The year 9 boys were keen to try and build on Wednesday’s win and continue their good start to the season.
Unfortunately, Fairfax had other ideas and quickly scored 2 tries giving them a 14-0 lead. Southam started to fight back and after a period of sustained pressure building phases Zsombor touched down which was converted by Logan. The game ebbed and flowed with lots of penalties and both teams trying to gain the upper hand. Southam conceded another try after a quick break down the wing was touched down under the posts to give Fairfax a 21-7 half time lead.
Southam turned on the style at the start of the second half and quickly turned the game on its head all thanks to a fabulous hat trick from James P. All three tries demonstrated fantastic footwork and terrific pace to out pace the Fairfax defence. These tries gave Southam a 28-21 lead with 13 minutes to play. Unfortunately this would be the last of the tries for Southam who had put a great deal of grit and determination to get back into the game. The heat and forceful running from Fairfax resulted in a quick 2 try turnaround with Fairfax taking the lead 33-28 with 5 minutes to play. Southam tried their best to take the lead again but Fairfax created gaps in the defence to score a further 2 tries to take the game 47-28.
A fantastic game of rugby with both teams battling hard. There were big tackles, strong running and good sportsmanship in abundance. The result definitely didn’t reflect the close game.
Training is Wednesday and Thursday this week. Thank you to the supporters who came to watch.
Man of the match: James P for a superb hat trick.
