Year 8 Football

Work rate wins out as cup run continues

After an impressive 5-2 win against Kineton in the league the year 8 team looked to keep form going in the cup against Alcester Academy. On a large home pitch Southam started brightly and played to the width winning early corners. However, Alcester sucked up the early pressure and began to play the ball with more confidence. James P and Callum S broke play up well and timely challenges from Cameron B. shut the door. Ben D. also made a good save to keep them out. Southam began to play on the break a little more feeding Paul H. and Oli H. down the middle as well as wide on the wings. A Southam corner from Sam H.  saw the ball evade everyone resulting in a strong tackle from Jake H. and the ball bundled into the net. 1 -0 Southam at half time.

The second half saw much of the same with Alcester playing the ball well with not much in the way off outcome. Southam grew in confidence and started to thread balls through. Cameron M. showed strength out wide. If we could have switched the ball from left to right we could have got more gain. Oscar W has to be noted for the champagne moment with a lovely run from right back cutting in to give the ball into the path of Oli H. on the edge of the box who tucked the ball away with a neat calm strike to the left corner. With 10 minutes to go Southam then played the best football of the match, linking at communicating with each other and could have scored another. The score line would have been a little unfair on Alcester who did work hard. However, Southam’s shear work rate at breaking up play, movement off the ball towards the end and more clinical finishing meant a deserved win. Man of the Match was James P. in midfield who worked like a trojan through out the game.

Final score Southam 2 Alcester Academy 0.
