Sensational Simms Stuns Sheriff
Southam 40 Lawrence Sheriff 10

An incredible performance by captain Brendan Simms led his exciting Year 7 Rugby Team to a memorable victory against our illustrious opponents. Brendan and fellow centre Logan Morrison laid down the law to Sheriff with devastating runs that brought a hat-trick for Brendan and a sensational five tries for the rampaging Logan. In the first half, Brendan’s tackling was amazing, imprisoning Sheriff in their own half. Although the badge of honour went to Brendan, all the backs deserve credit as the handling skills in damp, cold conditions were heart warming. They are a joy to watch, with Reni Bulyka and Callum Stewart getting quick ball to the aforementioned Brendan and Logan. The excellent judgement of when to pass and offload set up exciting runners Max Shirley, Paul Hickey and Oscar Wain.
Champagne moment of the match came from James Byrne, an outrageously cheeky pass out of the back of his hand launched another sweeping attack. Earlier, James had stripped the ball off an opponent, who had been brilliantly lasso tackled by Callum Stewart, before feeding to Logan to score. James Pelter was awarded ‘Tackle of the Match’ for a try-saving, last ditch tackle after others had missed tackles. This was perfect Full Back play; as was his excellent counter attacks from long Sheriff kicks.
To some extent, Sheriff got out of jail as the score line could have been many more. Hardworking Hooker, Tom Werren was held up over the line, as was towering Second Row Oli Kitson, who just gets better and stronger game by game. Superb runs by Rory Spencer, Cameron Black and Zsombor Toth saw them stopped just a rattlesnake’s length from the line.
The second half marked the debut of Reni’s Scrum Half deputy Connor Barker. He was first to the draw, with an excellent opening tackle and a run that reflected his amazing agility. The Sheriff defence was starting to creak like saloon doors with props Ruben De Beer and Max Fraser-Pope dominant in the ruck and maul.
This was a great team performance, there are no lone rangers in our side!
