Success for Southam at first round of English Schools Cross Country Cup

The first round of the English Schools Cross Country Cup took place at Princethorpe College on Monday afternoon. The competition is a team event where the scores of each individual gets added together to create a team score. The lowest score wins with the top two teams qualifying for the regional round later in the year.

The first race was the Junior Girls event (Year 7&8), which saw the 6 girls completing 2 full laps of the course. A fantastic run by all girls saw them finish with a surprising low score of 30, leaving them in good contention of qualifying for the next round. Individual successes came from Elspeth Unitt finishing in a fantastic 2nd place narrowly missing out on the victory to a very good runner from Kenilworth. Elspeth was closely followed by two of our new year 7’s Madeleine Jacks and Seinna Viteri in 6th and 7th places respectively. The final 3 runners completed the race all coming in the top 30 (Poppy Lister – 15th, Poppy Hilton – 22nd and Mae Quinney – 27th).

Unfortunately the junior boys team seemed to have a few last minute drop outs however James Pelter managed to complete the course finishing in the top 30.

The third race of the day came from the Intermediate Girls (Year 9&10), again the girls continued to impress with fantastic running from Emily Lovett finishing in 3rd place – her best ever finish. Emily was closely followed by Ana Lovett in 13th and Rosita Gugutkova in 15th place. The team was complete with the final 3 runners again finishing in the top 30 (Georgia Eversden – 20th, Sarah Costa – 24th and Alice Parsons – 28th).

The final race was a long one from the Intermediate Boys – the boys had to complete 3 full laps of the course. It was a tough ask but the boys managed to battle the course and complete it finishing inside the top 30. Jacob Watson being the first boy home in 17th, closely followed by Harley Wright and Jake Oxley in 18th and 19th place respectively. Sam Lambert completed the team score coming home shortly after in 22nd place.

The team results will be released in the next few days, where we will find out if any teams have qualified for the regional round.

A fantastic performance by all today – well done you should all be proud of yourselves.

Mrs Turton and Mr MacGibbon.
